Academic Safety During Nursing Simulation: Perceptions of Nursing Students and Faculty

Benner, Sutphen, Leonard, and Day (2010), in their recent work Educating Nurses: A Call for Radical Transformation, recommend that nurse educators vary the means by which they assess their students’ achievement and include the use of simulation, skills labs, classroom activities, standardized patients, and work with actual patients. Benner et al. also note the benefits of high-fidelity simulation for educating nurses, including the ability to mimic real-life patient scenarios in a safe environment and to observe patients’ responses and outcomes. Standardizing scenarios and teaching practices also allows faculty to assess students’ competencies in a lifelike clinical setting (Ironside, Jeffries, & Martin, 2009).
